When there is a heatwave, it is easy to panic-buy the first unit that appears in stock. This guide explains the basics to check before buying.
1. Make sure it is a real portable air conditioner
A proper portable air conditioner uses refrigeration and normally has a large exhaust hose that vents hot air out of a window or wall. If a product only has a water tank and a fan, it is usually an air cooler rather than an air conditioner.
2. Check the cooling capacity
Portable air conditioners are often sold by BTU rating. A higher BTU rating usually means more cooling power, but also more cost, more size, more noise and higher electricity use.
For a small bedroom or office, many buyers look at compact portable units. Larger rooms, sunny rooms or rooms with lots of equipment may need a more powerful model.
3. Think about the exhaust hose
Most portable AC units need to vent hot air outside. Before buying, check whether the included window kit will work with your window style. UK windows are not always ideal for standard sliding-window kits.
4. Check noise levels
Portable air conditioners have compressors and fans, so they are not silent. If you want one for sleeping, check the listed noise level and read retailer reviews carefully.
5. Check delivery times during heatwaves
During high demand, a product may technically be in stock but not available for fast delivery. Always check delivery dates before ordering.
6. Check returns and warranty
Portable air conditioners are bulky, so returns can be inconvenient. Check the retailer’s return policy, warranty terms and whether the product is new, refurbished or an open-box return.
7. Avoid confusing product titles
Some listings use words like “air cooler”, “cooling fan” or “portable cooler”. These are not always proper air conditioners. If there is no exhaust hose and no refrigeration system, it is probably not a true AC unit.
